An innocent harbor master turns up on the streets of Paris, confused, wounded, and with a bank statement showing someone has deposited 300,000 francs to his account. Upon returning home to his port town in Normandy, he is poisoned to death while he sleeps. Maigret makes his way through the maze of shadowy canals to investigate the dark motives that lead to his death.
